Gold, Gold, and More Gold with Barry Morentz
A touch of gold adds greater visual interest and dazzle to your writing, whether a simply addressed envelope, a poem, or an important award. In this workshop we explore the numerous materials available to impart some quality of illumination to our work. We sample six simple methods of applying gold leaf to both raised and flat areas of the paper. We experiment with gold and bronze powders, and we try various kinds of metallic watercolors, gouache, pencils, and glitter.
Students receive a chart with 32 squares to be filled with the different mediums, creating a ready-reference sheet for use in their home studios. Each student will receive sample vials of Ormoline, Instacol, Miniatum Size, Minitum Ink, Liquitex Gesso, and Speedball Metal Adhesive.
Please note we will NOT create classic gesso as that requires far more time than is afforded to this class.

Many of these can be purchased from Dick Blick, but you can also order online from Paper and Ink Arts or John Neal for more specialized calligraphy supplies. Order in advance to account for shipping times!
Favorite broad edge pens, at least a fairly large nib such as Mitchell #2 or Speedball #1; a small nib such as Mitchell #5 or equivalent for small writing
• Sakura gold gelly roll pen or similar
• 2 brushes: Princeton Round #3 and pointed 00. These are for applying size and synthetics are fine …no need to spend a lot of money
• cheap mixing brush
• 6H pencil or ball-tip burnisher for tooling gold
• at least 3 pieces good quality card stock cut to 3x8 with a name written on each one with a LARGE nib; these will be decorated in different ways with gold
• notebook, 2B pencil, paper towels, water container
Optional: Black ink, preferably Higgins Eternal
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR
BARRY MORENTZ was motivated by his love for language and handwriting to study calligraphy. After 46 years he remains fascinated and challenged by the power and beauty of letterforms to dramatically convey the emotional power of a text. Shakespeare, Danté, and the music of Brahms, Elgar, Verdi and Wagner continually inspire his calligraphic interpretations.
In his midtown Manhattan residence he creates calligraphic works and hand-made books, boxes, and portfolios. He began his formal calligraphic studies, primarily with Sheila Waters, in 1977, and eventually with Gottfried Pott, Hermann Zapf, and numerous other calligraphic luminaries. A highlight of his education was paleographic studies in Rome and the Vatican Library.
He has taught at 5 international conferences and has led workshops in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore, and throughout the US and Canada. In 2017 he presented an extensive talk and demonstration at the Pen Museum in Birmingham, UK. When not slumped over his writing desk he spends his time in gourmet food shops and cooking while bombing out on Wagnerian opera.
