An Introduction to Spencerian Script with Kalo Chu

 
 
 

This is an introductory class to Spencerian Script - a historical style that was developed in America in the 1840's by Platt Rogers Spencer. Studying Spencerian helps to improve your overall handwriting, its elegant and graceful style can be used for daily correspondences - handwritten letters, stationery designs, wedding invitations and many more. This course is tailored for complete beginners or calligraphers of any level to finesse their dip pen calligraphy skills. This introductory class will cover a brief history of Spencerian Script, an explanation of the tools used, the fundamental principles of minuscules and majuscules, letter connections, tricks and tips to achieve the thick swells and delicate hairlines.

MATERIALS LIST

  • • Oblique pen holder

  • A pointed pen nib (stiff) e.g., Zebra Titanium G or Nikko G

  • • An ink that creates a fine hairline (e.g., walnut or Higgins Eternal or iron gall)

  • • Semi-transparent paper such as Canson marker paper, Borden & Riley marker paper

  • • Paper clips to hold guide sheets

  • • Mechanical pencil

  • • An eraser

  • • 3 different Multi-color ball point pen for taking notes (suggested colours - Blue, Red, Yellow)

  • • A ruler with centimeters

 
 

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Kalo Chu is a classically trained calligrapher located in Hong Kong. She is also the founder of "Kalo Make Art" and has been promoting the art of calligraphy, penmanship and handwriting in Hong Kong since 2015. Over the years, Kalo has taught over 5,000 students for both children and adults.

Kalo has studied Spencerian under some world renowned penmen including Master Penmen Michael Sull and Harvest Crittenden. In recent years, Kalo earned the Certificate of Excellence in both Spencerian Script and Engrosser's Script awarded by IAMPETH, she was also invited to teach at the first IAMPETH Virtual in 2021 and Spencerian at IAMPETH in 2024. She is constantly working to expand her calligraphy skills and inspire others to appreciate the art of handwriting.
